A one-off website usually costs less over time, while a monthly subscription costs less upfront and includes someone looking after the site. The right choice depends on your cash flow, how much you want to handle yourself, and what the contract says about minimum terms and ownership.
Here is how to compare the two honestly, with real numbers.
What is a website subscription?
A website subscription means you pay a monthly fee, sometimes with a small setup fee, and the provider designs, builds, hosts and maintains your website. Some plans advertise "$0 upfront". You are effectively renting the website while you pay.
A one-off build means you pay a fixed price for the website, then own it. You pay separately for hosting, a domain and any maintenance you want.
Neither is "better". They solve different problems: one-off protects your total spend, and a subscription protects your cash flow and your time.
The 24-month cost comparison
The easiest way to compare is to add up the total over two years. Using our own prices, excluding GST:
| Option | Upfront | Monthly | Total over 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Site, one-off | $590 | $0 | $590 plus hosting and care if you add them |
| Starter Care, subscription | $99 | $39 | $1,035 |
| Business Site, one-off | $1,190 | $0 | $1,190 plus hosting and care if you add them |
| Business Care, subscription | $149 | $79 | $2,045 |
Now consider a hypothetical plan advertised as "$0 upfront, $199 a month, 24-month minimum". The total over two years is $4,776 before GST. That might be good value if it includes a lot of ongoing work, and poor value if it doesn't. The point is to do the sum before you sign.
Remember to add the extras to the one-off option
A one-off site isn't free to run. Over 24 months, add the cost of hosting, your domain and any maintenance you want. For a small site that might be $250 to $1,000 over two years, depending on how much care you buy. Even so, the one-off option usually works out cheaper in the long run, as long as you're comfortable looking after the site or buying a care plan when you need it.
When a one-off build makes sense
- You have the budget upfront.
- You're happy to manage hosting and updates, or to add a care plan later.
- You want to own the website outright from day one.
- Your site is mostly static and rarely changes.
- You want to keep total costs as low as possible over several years.
When a subscription makes sense
- You want a low upfront cost and predictable monthly spending.
- You'd rather not think about hosting, backups, updates or security.
- You want a small number of content changes included each month.
- You're starting out and cash flow matters more than total cost.
- You want one person responsible if something breaks.
Which suits my type of business?
| Situation | Usually better |
|---|---|
| New business, tight cash flow | Subscription |
| Established business with a budget set aside | One-off |
| Sole trader who is rarely at a computer | Subscription |
| Business that updates its site often | Subscription with changes included |
| Business with in-house technical help | One-off |
| Business that may change providers soon | One-off, so you own it |
What to check in any subscription contract
- Minimum term. How long are you committed, and what happens if you cancel early?
- Ownership. Do you keep your content, images and domain if you leave? Does the design belong to you?
- What's included. Hosting, domain, SSL, backups, updates, content changes and support.
- Price changes. Can the monthly fee rise during the term?
- Exit process. Can you get a copy of your site, and is there a fee?
- Renewal. Does it roll over automatically, and with how much notice to cancel?
What can go wrong, and how to protect yourself
- You can't leave. Long minimum terms with early-exit fees can trap you. Prefer short terms and clear exit rules.
- You lose your site. If the provider owns everything, you may have to rebuild from scratch if you cancel. Make sure you keep your content and domain.
- The price creeps up. Ask whether the fee is fixed, and what notice you get of any increase.
- You pay for things you don't use. Check how many changes are included each month and whether unused changes roll over.
- The provider disappears. Keep copies of your logins, domain details and content, and ask that your domain is registered in your name.
How our subscription works
We keep ours simple:
- Starter Care: $99 setup plus $39 a month. A 5-page website built for you, with hosting, domain, SSL, updates, backups, security and 1 content change a month.
- Business Care: $149 setup plus $79 a month. Up to 10 pages, 3 content changes a month, traffic reporting and priority support.
- 6-month minimum, then month to month. Cancel with 30 days' notice.
- You keep your content and domain. If you cancel, we provide a copy and the hosted site stops at the end of the term.
All prices are in AUD, excluding GST. See the full details on our packages page.
A simple way to decide
- How much can you comfortably spend today?
- How much do you want to spend each month?
- Do you want to look after the site yourself?
- Will you keep the site for more than two years?
If you can pay upfront and you're happy to manage the site, choose one-off. If you want low upfront cost and want someone else to handle the upkeep, choose a subscription, and read the contract carefully.
Frequently asked questions
Is a website subscription cheaper than buying a website?
Not in the long run if you keep it for years, but it can be cheaper in the first year and it spreads the cost. Add up the total over 24 months to compare.
What happens to my website if I stop paying?
It depends on the contract. With many subscriptions the hosted site stops. Ask whether you receive a copy of your site and content. With ours, you keep your content and domain.
Can I switch from a subscription to owning my website?
You can ask. At CorewebIT we're happy to discuss a one-off buy-out for the design, so check any provider's terms before you sign.
Which is better for a new business?
If cash is tight, a low-cost monthly plan can help you get online quickly. If you have a small budget upfront, a one-off Starter Site is usually the cheapest over two years.
Do subscription prices include GST?
Not always. Many providers quote prices without GST. Ours are shown excluding GST.
